A “Toss-Up” (March 23, 2025)

Good Sunday Morning! First Sunday of spring! And, yes my prediction from last week’s letter was a direct hit. Prime Minister Mark Carney will visit Rideau Hall (or has already done so earlier this morning depending on when you are reading this) and ask the G-G to dissolve parliament and call the election today. As I write this, the only room left for speculation is whether we vote on April 28 or May 5. I will resist my inevitable temptation to delve into parliamentary trivia to explain the difference between dissolution and prorogation, but you guessed it. Staying United Is Critical (March 16, 2025)

I rarely make a prediction–in writing–about politics- especially in the volatile times we are in! But today is an exception. I am close to 100% sure that a week from today – March 23 – our new Prime Minister, the Right Honourable Mark Carney, will stroll over to Rideau Hall to ask the Governor General to call an election. Do Not Be Discouraged (March 9, 2025)

Good Sunday Morning!

Let me start with a quick report on the Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons and a shout out to Keith and Bern Wyton of Vancouver Island who, with a group of like-minded peace activists started the Peace Train. I met up with the Peace Train in late November 2024 in Ottawa. They had traveled from all over Canada with a clever message, “Train is a verb. If you want peace, Train for Peace.” With MP Gord Johns, Greens co-hosted a reception for them on Parliament Hill. I cannot remember exactly how it happened (rather organically as with all things that grow naturally!) but I asked if they knew about the Third Meeting of States Parties to the Convention for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons taking place on March 3-7, 2025. I told them I was taking the train from Montreal to New York and asked if they would like to join me. As it turned out, it felt more like I joined them!
