July 2022
As you know, all parties and other non-profit organizations rely on donations to keep running. Donors are the lifeblood of the GPC for sure, and we are providing this information because we have had some questions about different ways to donate, and donating to the Saanich-Gulf Islands Electoral District Association (the SGI EDA) vs the national party (GPC) – and what is the difference?
Here is an explanation of donation options, in the event that you are planning to make a donation this year, currently make donations, or would like to learn more. We want to make this as easy and clear as possible, and we thank you in advance for considering this…
- Donations can be made either to the Saanich-Gulf Islands Greens for local use, or the Green Party of Canada for national office use, or both. As mandated by Elections Canada, the 2022 maximum donation limits for a taxpayer are $1675 to one or more EDAs combined (e.g., SGI, Victoria, etc.), and $1675 to one or more national parties (the GPC).
- Significant tax credits are available for political contributions. See the FAQ section of the SGI Website — “Donations” for details.
- Donations to SGI can be made online by credit card, through the mail by cheque, or online by e-transfer. The credit card method is via the GPC national office. Cheques and e-transfers go directly to SGI. Donations to the GPC are made online by credit card. See details below.
- IF you direct a donation to SGI via the GPC (credit card), the donation will count toward the national party limit of $1675. Payments by cheque or e-transfer to SGI count toward the local EDAs limit. If you wish to donate to both SGI and the GPC, and the combined total is more than $1675, make sure that the sum of credit card donations does not exceed the $1675 limit for the national party, by making some (or all) of the donation to SGI by cheque or e-transfer.
- Tax receipts are issued by the entity that first receives the money, even when it is transferred later. That means you may get two receipts for your donations if, for example, you donate to SGI by cheque and to the national party by credit card.
- For monthly direct donations to SGI, please email the Financial Agent at SGIgreenpartyFA@gmail.com to discuss the best process for you.
